An annotated list of Irish students at the University of Valladolid, 1585-1781

Here is offered an annotated list of Irish students who attended the University of Valladolid between 1585 and 1781. The entries are arranged and numbered by dating, in the order of the first appearance within the records. Each number is followed by the student's Hispanised Christian name and surname, in the form that they appear in the records. If known, this name is followed by diocese, town, or city of provenance. The English and Irish Gaelic names are given in a following line, together with details about their ecclesiastical status and degrees gained, whenever possible. Next come the details of courses and degrees taken, identified by abbreviated references to the sources. Finally, biographical details are given, accompanied with crossreferences to related sources.

A former student at the University of Salamanca, Aug 1584-Mar 1588 ('Daniel Hiferniano, de la diócesis de Stumia (Tuam ?) en el reino de Yrlanda'). Received a yearly allowance from that University. Fray Luis de León reported his bringing certificates from Rome and other places. See Amalio Huarte, 'Petitions of Irish Students in the University of Salamanca, 1574-1591,' Archivium Hibernicum, vol 4 (1915), pp 96-130 (117-120).

Identified as a student in Valladolid, 1588-1590, by Declan M Downey, 'Pietas Austriaca and "Dispensers of Royal Authority": The early Irish Colleges and Habsburg cultural strategies,' in Forming Catholic Communities: Irish, Scots and English College Networks in Europe, 1568-1918, ed by Liam Chambers and Thomas O'Connor, Catholic Christendom 6 (Leiden: Brill, 2017), pp 62–90.

Completed his studies in Salamanca, this time, in the Irish college. In 1593, he asked King Felipe II for protection in a safe return trip to Ireland (AGS, G.A., 389, 384, Memorial del licenciado Daniel Hiffernan, Madrid, 1 July 1593). See Enrique García Hernán, 'Estudios sobre la Misión de Irlanda': http://www.irishinspain.es/irlandeses/doc/research/estudiosmisionirlanda.php/.

Thomas White (Tomás de Faoit), Diocese of Lismore

  • 16 Apr 1589. Grammar. AUVa LIB-33, fol 75v

In all probability, this is Thomas White (1556-1622), of Clonmel, who would become founder of the Irish College of Salamanca in 1592 and its Superior one year later, after having petitioned Philip II to endow a house for the Irish exiles that frequented the streets in Valladolid, living in charity.

Registered as a student at Alcalá in 1582 (Óscar Recio Morales, Irlanda en Alcalá: La comunidad irlandesa en la Universidad de Alcalá y su proyección europea, 1579-1785, [Alcalá de Henares]: Fundación Colegio del Rey, [2004], p 120) and as 'Thomas Vitus Clunmel. Jesuita' in the list of early Irish students at Salamanca since 1592, kept in the Russel Library (S. 40/2) (Fenning, 'Students of the Irish College at Salamanca, 1592–1638,' 19, 35, 8).

He entered the Jesuit Order in 1593, acted as first Rector of the Irish College in Lisbon between 1606 and 1608 and Superior at Santiago (1612) and Seville (1619). See 'White, Thomas, 1556-1622, Jesuit priest,' Irish Jesuit Archiveshttps://www.jesuitarchives.ie/white-thomas-1556-1622-jesuit-priest/.

According to John Healy, 'about the year 1582' Thomas White was studying theology in Valladolid and involved in the 'faculty of pedagogy' (Maynooth College: Its Centenary History, 1895, p 57). There seems to be no evidence for either of these two facts. John Coppinger, his contemporary, simply testified to Thomas White’s questing for alms and administrating student life in the city (Mnemosynum or Memoriall to the Afflicted Catholickes in Ireland, 1606, p 268).  Denis J O'Doherty convincingly refuted the notion that he was a learned man, as ‘he never was more than a Spiritual Coadjutor’ in the Jesuit seminaries, and defended instead that '[w]hat is more probable is that he himself went to Valladolid as a student, and . . . devoted himself to the care and maintenance of his fellow-students and countrymen' (‘Fr Thomas White,’ p 580). This would explain the fact that the 'Thomas Victus' in the Valladolid University Archive enroled in a basic study such as Grammar.

There is a man named 'Richardus Cor Waterford' in the list of Irish students at Salamanca published by Fenning ('Students of the Irish College at Salamanca, 1592–1638,' 18). The Dominican ‘Richardus Caronius Medensis Dominicanus’ is also listed (19, 25).

There is one 'Ricardo Carron diocesis mediensis,’ from the town of Kilkenny (‘ortus est in oppido Kylkeniae (?)’), who was admitted in Salamanca in 1600 and took the oath at the age of 22, in 1601. See Denis J. O'Doherty, 'Students of the Irish College Salamanca (1595-1619),' Archivium Hibernicum, vol 2 (1913), pp 1-36 (11).

Later educated at the Irish College, Salamanca. See Hugh Fenning, 'Students of the Irish College at Salamanca, 1592-1638': 'D. David Duleus Rospontanus' (10). He could thus be one of the young students brought by Fr Thomas White SJ from Valladolid to Salamanca in 1592.

Fenning also makes this annotation: ‘Of New Ross. On the mission, 1611. “Dulano” on the list of 1611’ ('Students of the Irish College at Salamanca, 1592-1638,' 27). Could this be the David Duill listed resident '[i]n the county of Wexford,' c 1613? See Mac Cuarta, 79.

Possibly the ‘D. Bernardus Moartagh Medensis’ listed as a student at the Irish College, Salamanca (Fenning, ‘Students of the Irish College at Salamanca, 1592–1638,’ 16). He could be one of the group of students brought by Fr Thomas White SJ from Valladolid to Salamanca in 1592.

Perhaps the Archdeacon and Vicar General of Clonfert [?Clonmacnoise], Dean of Ardagh, of this name, who died a prisoner in Dublin in 1601. See David Rothe, De processu martyriali quonrandam fidei pugilum in Hibernia: pro complemento sacrorum analectorum (Cologne, apud Stephanum Rolinum, 1619): ‘Bernardus Moriarti’ (l u2).

Conor, or Cornelius, Dorian (Conchubhar Deóráin)

  • c. 9-17 Dec 1599. Theology. AUVa LEG-75/014

‘Cornelio de Orano, irlandés’ was a student of Theology at the University of Valladolid, when he placed a civil lawsuit against Gaspar López de San Tomé, ‘estudiante de Cánones,’ by early December 1599 (AUVa, LEG-75/014). His testimony unveals the hardships the Irish community strived to endure during the plague of 1599.

According to Fenning, ‘D. Cornelius Deoranus Ossoriensis,’ named “de Horan” in the list of 1611, arrived in Salamanca in 1605 ('Students of the Irish College at Salamanca, 1592–1638,' 10, 27). Probably one the eleven students who, according to Edmund Hogan, were brought by Fr James Archer SJ from Valladolid in that year (Distinguished Irishmen of the Sixteenth Century (London: Burns and Oates, 1894), p 349.

O’Doherty notes that that he was a priest (‘Students of the Irish College of Salamanca (1595-1619),’ 18). William Carrigan’s History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory (1905) registers one ‘Conogher O'Doran’ in the list of Ossory priests of 1605 and ‘Conhore O'Doran’ in another list of ‘seditious priests,’ drawn up between Sept 1612 and April 1613 (p. 242). Later listed as a student at the Irish College of Salamanca as 'Dionisio Purcel Waterford,' he returned on the Irish Mission by 1611 (Fenning, 'Students of the Irish College at Salamanca, 1592–1638,' 10, 32). He appears in Irish government lists of priests, Jesuits, and friars banned from Ireland c 1613, as ‘Dionis Purcell, priest,’ a resident of the County of Waterford, and as ‘Dennishe Purcell,’ lodging at ‘Anstace Devorix’ in June 1610 (Mac Cuarta, 72, 72n35, 84, 84nl34).

May be one the eleven students who, according to Hogan (p. 349), were brought by Fr James Archer SJ from Valladolid to Salamanca in 1605.

On 12 April 1652, he requested a record of his studies at the UVa (AUVa LEG-566, Exp 566; also LEG-567, Exp 001). He was to visit Madrid to apply for a viaticum to return to Ireland. The Secretary would not provide him with it, as there was no record of his having ever matriculated at the University. In his request he claimed that 'he was not aware that he should have done so.' Three witnesses testified on his attendance and completion of the couses of lectures in the list below, and on the 15th, the Rector agreed to issue and sign a certificate.

A former student at the Irish Colleges of Santiago and Salamanca, his stay had brought despair to their Rectors for having caused expense 'without any fruit'; as appears in the records, after his stay in Salamanca (c Feb 1646-1647), Peter Daly left without taking leave or giving receipt of the 300 reales received and spent on clothes and the 300 of his ViaticumSee Denis J O'Doherty, 'Students of the Irish College, Salamanca, 1619-1700,’ Archivium Hibernicum, vol 3 (1914), pp 87-112, no. 152: ‘Petrus Daly (O'Dalaig). Diocaesis Conflertensis (Clonfert).' He had been examined for entrance and approved by the Superior of the Seminary in late November 1647. May be the same individual as the 'Gerardus Vitus. Comitatus Westmediensis in eiusdem diocesi' that matriculated at the Irish College, Salamanca on 9 December 1652. See O'Doherty, 'Students of the Irish College, Salamanca, 1619-1700,’ 107 (no 168).

He applied for the viaticum on 15 July 1658, upon completion of his studies. See Cristina Bravo Lozano, Spain and the Irish Mission, 1609-1707 (Routledge, 2019), Table BM1. In his memorandum, he claimed to have taken it 'so as to be able to, under that pretext, administer the Holy Sacraments to the Catholics in that kingdom more easily' ('para poder con este pretexto administrar con más facilidad los santos sacramentos a los católicos de aquel reino,' AGS).

Roderic O'Higgins must have resided in Valladolid for at least twenty years. After completing his first and second degree, from 1660 through to 1678, 'Don Rodrigo Higuín' competed for practically every university Professorship that became vacant, in this order: Prima of Philosophy, Natural Philosophy, Súmulas, Logic, Arts, Vísperas de Medicina, Método. Apparently, he was never awarded one. James White (Séamas de Faoit); Jesuit pr.

  • 27 Aug 1697. Bachelor's Degree in Theology. AUVa LIB-199, fol 328r

Fr James White SJ (1660-1722), natural of An Daingean, Co Offaly, entered the Society of Jesús at Villagarcía in 1683. He studied at Santiago and began Theology at Salamanca in 1680: 'In October, 1679, . . . Diego Vittus . . . , having been examined and approved in Santiago, . . . matriculated for Theology' (O'Doherty, 'Students of the Irish College, Salamanca (1715-1796),' 20). He taught Philosophy at Logroño and Theology at Valladolid, and was sent to Compostella in 1697, where he held a Chair in Theology and graduated as Doctor of Divinity. In 1720, he resigned a teaching position at Valladolid and was sent as Operarius to St Ignatius, where he died in 1722. See 'White, James, 1660-1722, Jesuit priest,' Irish Jesuit Archives, www.jesuitarchives.ie/white-james-1660-1722-jesuit-priest/.

This record confirms his degree in Theology from Valladolid in 1697. It thus corrects the date that Ofelia Rey Castelao (probably after Fr Francis Finegan SJ) gives of his second arrival in Santiago and corroborates Xosé Ramón Barreiro's placing of his entrance at Compostela in 1697: 'Los irlandeses y la Universidad de Santiago,' Historia de la Universidad de Compostela, Vol I: De los orígenes al siglo XIX, edited by Xosé Ramón Barreiro (Santiago de Compostela: Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, 2000), pp 243-54 (248).

On the dispute between the Cathedral Chapter and the University at Santiago, on account of the printing of his Manifiesto del más prudente obrar (Lyon, 1707), after which he was deprived of his Chair and sent again to Valladolid c 1719, see Ofelia Rey Castelao, 'Disidentes y refugiados en una ciudad tradicional de la Edad Moderna: Santiago de Compostela,' Erebea, vol 7 (2017), pp 41-62 (61) and Ramón Barreiro, pp 248-49.
