Diego de Saavedra Fajardo's Idea de vn principe politico christiano (1655). Pp. 662-663

Title

Diego de Saavedra Fajardo's Idea de vn principe politico christiano (1655). Pp. 662-663

Description

After the Peace of Westphalia (1648) and following the end of the English Civil Wars, Spain and England begin their respective histories as modern states: politics are now separated from religion and both enjoy independent sovereignties. The engraved emblem shows a beehive in the mouth of a dead lion and the motto 'The fruits of war.' Published during the Thirty Years War, its meaning turns enigmatic: is war, after all, the necessary means to achieve peace?
